About Rothwell Shotokan Karate Club

Rothwell Shotokan Karate Club has been established for many years now. It has a large club membership with most students training on a regular basis. Our club has turned out some excellent students most of whom are now black belts. The club has a mixture of students training Men, Women and Children. We also have a lot of families training together. This is good to see as Karate is seen as an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

John Taylor & Simon Merrett performing ‘Jitte’The club is actually run by three family members too! The classes at Rothwell SKC are usually divided up into groups according to grade. This way everyone can manage to practice karate at their own level. Students can then do techniques, kata and kumite, which is appropriate to their grade. Rothwell Shotokan Karate Club trains at three separate venues which has training available for students five times per week. Clubs are based in Rothwell, East Ardsley and Carlton.

All three-club instructors have been fully checked and cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau and have all been assessed as KUGB Instructors. Sensei Sharon Taylor is employed by West Yorkshire police as a Police Community Support Officer. Sensei John Taylor is the owner/ partner of an electrical engineering company based in Leeds. Sensei Rob Taylor is a full-time karate instructor and spends his time running all three Rothwell SKC dojo’s. Sensei’s Rob, Sharon and John have a combined membership to the Karate Union of Great Britain of more than forty years.

All of the club Sensei’s have attended many specialist training courses with some of the Worlds leading Karate instructors. Topics include kata, kumite, flexibility, child safety, nutrition and first aid. Rob, Sharon and John have over the years trained with senior instructors such as: Keinosuke Enoeda 9th Dan, Andy Sherry 8th Dan, Terry O Neill 7th Dan, Bob Rhodes 7th Dan, Frank Brennan 6th Dan and Gary Harford 6th Dan who is our visiting instructor for grading examinations.

Jack Tingle & Thomas Abel during trainingRothwell Shotokan Karate Club has many National and International affiliations with other large karate associations and bodies. We are directly affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), which is the largest and most successful karate association in Great Britain. The KUGB set the standard for British karate more than forty years ago.

Through our affiliation to the KUGB we are also affiliated to other associations like: Karate England, English Traditional Karate Body (EKTB), European Shotokan Karate Association (ESKA) and the World Shotokan Karate Association (WSKA)

Rothwell Shotokan Karate Club is also host of many KUGB recognised Kyu (coloured belt) gradings and training courses. These are held every three Months with official, appointed KUGB examiners, who are all graded at 6th Dan or above. All the Kyu grades that are awarded by the KUGB are also internationally recognised by the E.S.K.A and W.S.K.A.

Rothwell Shotokan Karate Club has had some successes in competition. Most of the success we have, come in the way of Sensei Rob achieving some pleasing results in many Kata events. Our club have also had students winning trophies at regional competitions. Sharon Taylor (2nd Dan), Joe Bennett (1st Dan), Adam Smith (1st Kyu) and Charlotte Whittles (5th Kyu) to name a few. Club Instructor, Sensei Rob Taylor is the current 2006 North West Open Kata Champion and 2006 All England Open kata Champion.
